An award-winning journalist, editor and newsroom manager with deep expertise in digital multimedia journalism, Susie has held senior editorial roles at ABC News, Newsweek Daily Beast, and Vocativ. She is a winner of the Edward R. Murrow Award for Feature Reporting and has five Emmy award nominations. Most recently, she has been a filmmaker-in-residence at Harvard University’s Shorenstein Center on Media, Politics and Public Policy, where she is producing and directing a documentary on media coverage of the 2016 presidential election.
Susie, who will be based at GMG headquarters in New York and report to GMG CEO Raju Narisetti, joins the GMG’s leadership team, which also includes Chief Operating Officer Lauren Bertolini and General Counsel and Executive Vice President Lynn Oberlander. GMG Executive Managing Editor Alex Dickinson along with GMG’s site editors, newsroom video, social & audience, and art department leadership will all report to Susie. She will formally join GMG in on September 5.
“Susie is taking on the newsroom leadership role at Gizmodo Media Group at a time when our journalism is robust and attracting new, and growing, audiences. Her proven journalism credentials, her expertise in multimedia storytelling, her well-known track record of mentoring talent, and her passion and enthusiasm for our sites made her a clear choice for this critical role,” said Narisetti. “In the many conversations many of us had with her, it was very apparent that Susie will strengthen and reinforce our newsroom and its ethos, while finding smart ways to get our journalism—be it blogs, podcasts, video, television shows—in front of more audiences across more platforms.”
Susie served as Chief Content Officer of Vocativ until January 2017, overseeing a range of content and operational functions including editorial, video, audience, and analytics as well as the product and development teams. In her role as Deputy Director of Editorial at Newsweek Daily Beast, she served as a member of the site’s management team, launched its video efforts and executive produced Daily Beast TV. Susie began her journalism career at ABC News where she held a range of roles including senior producer for “World News” and anchor producer for Diane Sawyer, George Stephanopoulos, Charlie Gibson and David Muir. She also helped launch the first season of Katie Couric’s syndicated talk show “Katie” for Disney/ABC in 2012.
Susie was also a 2014 Nieman Fellow and lecturer at Harvard University. She is a cum laude graduate of Barnard College and has a master’s degree from Columbia University’s School of Journalism.
